DOCTORAL PROGRAMS IN MOLECULAR AND MACROMOLECULAR SCIENCES and ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES:
Students with an MSc degree, or those currently enrolled in one of UPEI's MSc programs, may wish to challenge themselves and pursue a doctorate level degree program within the constellations of Molecular and Macromolecular Sciences (MMS) or Environmental Sciences (ESC).
The MMS PhD program is unique to Canada as the only research-intensive PhD program featuring an integrated business component. This value-added degree looks to develop the research, critical thinking and communication skills of PhD chemists and physicists, deepening their understanding of molecules and macromolecules. From theoretical physics and chemistry projects to synthetic polymer and small molecule chemistry to analysis of molecular properties students will engage in a four-year research project. Along with intensive research work in their field, students will take key courses in both Molecular and Macromolecular Sciences and business, culminating in a capstone project conducted in collaboration with a commercial partner. The unique program will provide students with a clear advantage over other PhD students when entering the workforce and continuing their careers. See summary here.
The ESC PhD program entails rigorous research within and among an array of environmental disciplines and a curricular component oriented towards strategic communication. The research gravitates around an original project that immerses our students on the assessment and tackling of environmental issues on terrestrial, freshwater or marine habitats. The unique curricular component provides our graduates with the tools to communicate research across multiple stakeholders and to effectively engage on the environmental decision-making process. Research and communication training are facilitated by the unique geo-political features of Prince Edward Island and the close proximity between UPEI environmental researchers and industry, government agencies, and other stakeholders. The scope of the research project, combined with the unique training on communication, provide our PhD students with an edge for further career development. See summary here.
